Simplification goes beyond just reducing the number of material possessions you own. It is a philosophy. It's about uncomplicating your life—not just your closet. Here are some tips to ponder as you re-assess and begin to simplify the many aspects of your life ... Possessions ...The two-year rule. If you have not used something in two years, throw it out, or give it away. Old clothes, things in boxes in the basement, old toys, products you purchased from a late-night infomercial—if you haven't used them, say good-bye. Closets and basements are a great place to begin. The only exception to this rule may be fitness equipment. My advice here is, use! Then you won't be breaking the rule ... :) How many is enough? Consider donating your extra belongings to charity or a shelter—potentially helping needy single-parent families who may not be as fortunate as yourself. Books, clothes, appliances, toys—all these things often come in numbers, and can add to the general sense of clutter in our lives. Body, mind & spiritGetting back to basics. What is really important in your life? What do you really need to be happy and healthy? How much could you save if your down-sized some of the luxury items you may have in your life? What else could you do with the money? Simple pleasures. Re-discover the simple things in life, like taking walks, picnics, simple yet delicious food, reading, visiting with friends, spending time with your family and kids. Unplug yourself. Try turning off the television computer. or your cell phone. This will allow you time for other activities, and help to quiet your surroundings. Seek silence. All day you are bombarded with sound: appliances, TV, radio, talking, traffic, and much more. Silence, in our fast-paced society, is quickly becoming an endangered species. Find moments in your day to silence the world around you—allowing you to be alone with your thoughts. Meditate. Popular in may cultures, meditation is reputed to have many positive qualities. Some of the many benefits include reducing stress, improving memory, eliminating fatigue, and cultivating a general sense of peace. |
